Consider this your first and last warning.

Mercy. The vampire bitch had killed Boone. Angry tears pooled in the corner of my eyes. The owl had grown on me. I even think he may have liked me, or at least tolerated me. He was as part of The Warlock’s Workshop as the giant tree. Taking care of Boone’s body first, I wrapped him in a towel, put a plastic bag around him, then placed him in a box. I was sure Isla would want to give her pet a proper burial.

Isla came in around an hour later. I was busy scrubbing the bloodstains from the floor.

“What is that putrid smell?” she asked, pinching her nose.

The incense I’d lit did little to hide the smell. After I stood from the wet floor, I went to her.

She tilted my chin up to get a good look at my blotchy, tear-streaked face. “What’s gotten to you, love?”

I slung my arms over her shoulders. “Isla, I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault.”

She pulled back from my overbearing embrace. “It can’t be that bad. What happened?”

“I’m sorry, Isla. Boone’s dead. She killed him.” There was no sense in sugarcoating the news.

Her face turned as white as the witch’s. Shock rocked through her body in quivers of chills. I helped her to the stool behind the counter. It would have been easier to watch her cry or scream or anything else instead of the muted pain.

“Please put the sign on the door that we’re closed for the day.”

I did as she instructed.

“What… happened?” She sounded almost robotic.

“She’s wants something we—you—have.”

“Who is this person you speak of? Also, why Boone? He was loyal and smart…” Her voice faded like a shadow in darkness.

I knelt in front of her. I needed to start from the beginning—to tell the woman I respected and had grown to love the whole truth about what and who I was. “Do you know about the ritual on the Hunter’s Moon?”

She patted my hair. “Everly, dear, don’t believe everything in the Legends of Veil Rock. The ritual… well, it’s only a myth—”

“No, Isla. It isn’t. The immortals are here. I’m the one they’ve chosen. I’m their lamb.”

Her guarded gaze found mine. “No, love. That’s impossible.”

Isla was too distraught to continue the conversation.

I kissed her cheek, then went into the back of the store. Taking out my phone, I found Cameron’s name and pressed the call button.
